Quaid & Madi’s Couples Session: Winter Love at Flathead Lake – Playful Couples Photography in Montana Snow

If you know me (and honestly, even if you just kind of know me), you’ll recognize these two immediately. The guy in these photos who looks suspiciously like me? That’s my younger brother, Quaid. And the beautiful, free-spirited girl next to him? That’s Madi—his hilarious, big-hearted girlfriend who lights up every room she walks into.

Together, they’re the definition of Montana living. We’re talking summers filled with Flathead Lake sunsets, afternoons swinging clubs on the golf course, spontaneous road trips, and—most recently—turning their tiny house into a cozy little dream home. It’s the kind of simple, joy-filled life that feels straight out of a country song (or a Montana tourism commercial).

Since I picked up a camera professionally, Quaid and Madi have been my go-to couple whenever I needed people to model for me. No surprise there—I’ve basically been their unofficial photographer since they were 16, snapping pictures at every school dance and family event. So when a fresh, beautiful January snowstorm hit, we knew exactly what we needed to do: head to Somers Beach and capture the magic of a true Montana winter couples session.

People often think of Flathead Lake in the summertime—boats, beaches, bonfires. But honestly? Winter might be even more breathtaking. The lake turns a rich, unreal shade of blue that looks almost tropical against the snowy landscape. It’s quiet, dramatic, and absolutely perfect for creating photos that feel epic, romantic, and uniquely Montana.

As a Montana couples photographer, there’s nothing I love more than using the natural beauty of places like Somers Beach and Flathead Lake as backdrops for authentic, unscripted love stories. The snow crunching underfoot, the icy breeze, the way the sun still somehow finds a way to glow—every element adds depth and feeling to the shots. My philosophy for every couple's session is simple: Capture the real you. No awkward prom poses, no forced smiles, no rigid instructions. Just you, your person, and a whole lot of laughter.

Quaid and Madi have that kind of effortless energy that photographers dream about. They’re playful, a little competitive, totally in love, and absolutely not afraid to look silly together. That meant I could push the creative envelope with them, tossing out some of my favorite interactive prompts to spark genuine reactions:

  • The Drunk Walk Challenge – Pretend you're tipsy and try to walk in a straight line while bumping hips and giggling like crazy.
  • Race to the Camera – Whoever gets to me first wins (spoiler: Madi is fast).
  • Bear Hug Escape – Quaid wraps Madi in the biggest bear hug ever, and she tries to wiggle free while laughing uncontrollably.
  • Spin Like Crazy – Grab hands, spin until you can’t see straight, and let the laughter (and dizziness) take over.
  • The Classic Portrait Pose – Because amidst all the chaos, we always need a few frame-worthy, heart-melting close-up shots.

Using movement-based prompts like these is a key part of how I run authentic couples sessions. It's not about "getting the perfect pose"; it's about capturing the moments between the moments—the inside jokes, the spontaneous kisses, the way your eyes crinkle when you laugh. When you trust the process and let your guard down, that's when the magic happens. That’s when your session becomes not just photos, but memories frozen in time.

Winter sessions around Flathead Lake have a vibe you just can’t replicate in any other season. The crisp air, the colors, the stillness—it all combines to make your love story look even more cinematic and raw. Whether you're running through the snowbanks, cozying up for a bear hug, or simply standing hand-in-hand against that striking blue lake, it’s the kind of setting that instantly elevates your Montana couples photoshoot into something unforgettable.

Plus, if you’re the adventurous type (and let's be real, if you’re booking a Montana photoshoot, you probably are), winter offers the chance for some seriously fun memories you’ll talk about forever.
